A sewer camera is only as reliable as the push rod guiding it through the pipe. Whether you’re inspecting a residential sewer line or a commercial drain, the push rod takes constant abuse from bends, debris, and rough pipe conditions. Sooner or later, every contractor runs into the same question: what should you do when the push rod gets kinked, or the camera becomes stuck?
The wrong move can turn a minor issue into an expensive sewer camera repair. The right approach can help protect your equipment and get you back to work much faster.
Inspect a Kinked Push Rod Before Using It Again
A kinked push rod should never be ignored. Even if the camera is still producing a clear picture, the damage may extend beyond what you can see on the outside.
Start by removing the camera from the line and inspecting the entire length of the push rod. Look for sharp bends, flattened sections, cracks in the outer jacket, or any spots where the rod no longer feels smooth or flexible.
Many push rods contain fiberglass reinforcement. They also contain internal wiring that powers the camera head and sonde. A severe kink can weaken those internal components, even when the outer coating appears mostly intact. Continuing to use a damaged rod may eventually lead to video loss, sonde failure, or intermittent electrical problems.
If the damage is minor, keep a close eye on the system during future inspections. If the rod shows obvious structural damage or begins causing performance issues, have it professionally repaired before using it again.
What to Do If the Camera Gets Stuck
Finding a stuck camera can be frustrating, but pulling harder is rarely the answer.
Before applying more force, stop and think about what may be blocking the camera. Tree roots, heavy grease buildup, offset joints, collapsed pipe sections, or debris can all prevent the camera from moving forward or backward.
Instead of making one hard pull, move the push rod gently back and forth. Apply steady pressure as you work it loose. Rotating the rod slightly may also help the camera work around an obstruction. The goal is to free the camera without putting excessive stress on the push rod or camera head.
Avoid forcing the rod or twisting it aggressively. Too much force can damage the camera head, separate internal wiring, or permanently kink the push rod.
If the camera still refuses to move, clear the obstruction with the appropriate drain cleaning equipment before trying to retrieve it. Taking a few extra minutes can prevent a much larger repair bill later.
Prevent Future Push Rod Damage
Most push rod damage develops gradually rather than all at once. A few simple habits can help extend the life of your inspection equipment.
Before every inspection, make sure the line is suitable for camera work. If you expect heavy roots, grease, or debris, clean the pipe before sending the camera through.
As you reel the push rod back in, take a moment to wipe off dirt, grease, and debris. It is a simple habit, but it helps reduce wear on the rod and keeps buildup from working its way into the reel.
Check the camera head, connectors, and push rod before and after every job. Look for cracks, loose fittings, worn spots, or anything that does not feel right. Small issues are much easier to deal with before they turn into equipment failure on the next inspection.
Storage matters too. Do not stack heavy tools on top of the reel during transport. Also, make sure the push rod is not bent, pinched, or crushed while the system is stored between jobs.
A few minutes of basic care can save you from losing hours on a job later.
