If you have ever walked a line with a locator and gotten complete silence, you know how aggravating it is. The camera is down there, the sonde should be transmitting, but the locator is not picking up anything.
Before you start pulling equipment apart or blaming the gear, it helps to know what you are actually looking for. In most cases, a missing sonde signal comes down to one of three things: something is wrong with the sonde or transmitter, there is a problem with the locator, or site conditions are interfering with the signal. Here is how to work through each possibility.
Start with the Sonde and Transmitter
The sonde is what broadcasts the signal underground. It sits inside or just behind the camera head. If it is not transmitting, your locator will not detect it.
Check the Power Source
Power is the first thing to check. Depending on your camera setup, the sonde either runs on its own battery or draws power through the reel system.
If it uses a replaceable battery, install a fresh one. It may sound simple, but a drained battery is one of the most common reasons a locator cannot detect the signal, especially after the camera has been sitting in storage.
If the sonde draws power through the reel, inspect the connections at both ends. Corrosion or a loose contact can interrupt the circuit without being obvious.
Inspect the Camera Head
Next, inspect the camera head. Sewer pipes are tough on equipment, and the sonde housing often takes hard impacts.
A crack in the housing or a damaged seal allows moisture to get inside. Once water reaches the transmitter circuit, the sonde may stop working altogether.
Look for cracks, fogging behind the camera lens, or corrosion around the electrical contacts. These are all signs that moisture has entered the housing.
Confirm the Frequency
Frequency causes more problems than many people expect.
Most sondes transmit on 512 Hz, 640 Hz, or 33 kHz, depending on the manufacturer. Your locator must be set to the same frequency. If the settings do not match, the locator will scan right past the signal.
Before assuming the equipment has failed, check the camera documentation. Then confirm that both the camera and locator are operating on the same frequency.
Look for Internal Wiring Problems
Internal wiring faults are harder to identify. The conductors inside the push rod absorb constant stress, especially near the reel hub and camera head.
A broken wire can stop power from reaching the sonde even when everything looks fine on the outside.

Then Check the Locator
Once you have ruled out sonde problems, shift your attention to the locator. These tools are built for field work, but they still require regular maintenance.
Replace or Test the Batteries
Weak batteries are easy to overlook. The locator may power on and appear to work normally, but low voltage can reduce its detection range.
If you cannot remember the last time you changed the batteries, replace them. It only takes a few minutes and removes one of the most common causes of poor performance.
Adjust the Sensitivity
Next, check the sensitivity setting.
Most locators allow you to adjust how aggressively they scan. If the sensitivity is too low, the locator may not detect a sonde several feet underground.
Increase the sensitivity gradually and sweep the area slowly. Moving too quickly or scanning at the wrong angle can cause you to miss the signal completely.
Test the Locator
If the locator has always worked well but recently started missing signals, it may need calibration or repair.
A quick bench test can confirm this. Place a known-good sonde about one foot off the ground in an open area with no interference. If the locator still cannot detect it, the locator itself likely needs servicing.
Account for What the Site Is Doing to the Signal
Sometimes both pieces of equipment work properly, and the job site is the real problem.
Consider Pipe Depth
Depth is the first thing to consider.
Sonde signals become weaker as they travel through the ground. If the pipe is buried beyond the effective detection range of your locator and sonde, the signal may not reach the surface with enough strength to detect.
Manufacturers also offer higher-powered sondes for deeper locating. They may be worth considering if you regularly inspect deep sewer lines.
Check Soil Conditions
Soil conditions also affect signal strength.
Wet ground and clay-heavy soils absorb electromagnetic signals more than dry or sandy soil. Rocky or highly mineralized ground can also scatter the signal.
When working in these conditions, move slowly. Sweep the locator in a grid pattern and take your time. A weak signal is much easier to detect when you slow down.
Watch for Electrical Interference
Electrical interference is another common issue, especially in busy urban areas.
Power lines, buried electrical conduit, traffic signal loops, and some commercial lighting systems can all interfere with the sonde signal.
If possible, increase your distance from these interference sources. Switching to another compatible sonde frequency may also improve signal quality.
Don’t Ignore Nearby Metal
Nearby metal can also affect locating accuracy.
Steel pipe casings, large metal utility lines, and reinforced concrete can redirect or weaken the signal before it reaches the surface.
There is not much you can do about heavy shielding, but recognizing it as the cause can save you from spending unnecessary time troubleshooting equipment that is working correctly.
Finding the Right Solution
A missing sonde signal is usually easy to track down if you work through the problem step by step. Start with the sonde. Then inspect the locator. Finally, consider the site conditions. In most cases, one of those three areas will reveal the cause.
