It also makes it harder for the camera to move smoothly through the line. You may notice the head dragging, catching, or struggling to get around bends that it used to handle with no problem.
Why Rod Guides Matter
Rod guides serve a different purpose. They sit along the push rod and prevent it from rubbing directly against the drum frame as it feeds in and out.
Constant contact between the rod and the frame creates friction. Over time, it wears down both the guide and the outer surface of the push rod. As the guides wear, the rod is more likely to develop surface damage, fray, or eventually kink deeper in the line.
They also affect how smoothly the rod feeds out of the reel. When the guides wear down, the rod can begin catching or binding during retrieval, which puts extra strain on both the equipment and the operator.

For heavy daily use, inspecting these components every few months is a good habit. For lighter use, checking them once or twice a year is often enough. Inspect them every time you clean and service the camera.

If it has developed a permanent bend or kink that doesn’t straighten when the camera is laid flat, it’s time for a replacement. Worn rod guides create a different set of problems.

You cannot simply straighten a kinked push rod and put it back into service. In many cases, a repair technician must cut out the damaged section and re-terminate the rod. That reduces the usable rod length and adds repair costs.
